"People voted for our manifesto. They voted for our vision for Ireland. They want to see an end to British rule on this island."
Gerry Adams
I cannot for the life of me figure out how Gerry Adams can come out with such rubbish!
I don't think that many people will actually say that our Gerry is stupid, he is anything but, in fact he is most likely THE most intelligent man in Irish politics. Is he playing on the fact that the general voter on the street is a bit thick? There are several reasons why Sinn (mé) Féin did so well in the local and European elections. This is just my opinion
1. There was the referendum, which was about race, whatever way you look at it, people were feeling a bit patriotic when they were voting "yes" as so many of the "refugees" were taking advantage of us, this carried over to Sin Féin.
2. Voting Sin Féin is nearly always a protest vote, as everyone knows all of the other parties HATE them.
3. As far as I know, a lot more teenagers voted this time round, this is a good thing in many ways, but hardly none of them know what they were voting for, and therefore could fall into the trap of having this "romantic" view of what Sin Féin actually symbolise in 2004. Most young votes have an opinion about everything and voting for that shower is a form of rebellion. I dread to think what will happen if they reduce the voting age to 16, which is on the table!
4. Sin Féin were always in or around there, but never quite had enough to actually get someone in. There are more parties doing better now, i.e. The Greens, the various socialist parties, and more independents, all of which are diluting the vote pool from the larger parties. The worse the government perform, the better Gerry and his boys and girls will do.
5. They have young people running for them. I needn't say anything more on that!
Let me finish by saying I would love to see a United Ireland, but I would HATE to see that gang take the credit for it. They still condone murder. Don’t get me started on Columbia………….
